Natural Sweeteners

Nature brings us a few natural sweeteners that are good for our health. They are low in fructose and calories. They come from flowers and plants directly, with little processing for its use.

So, if you have problems with sugar consumption or you are looking for other ways to be healthier, here are some natural options for you.

Stevia

The most popular low-calorie sweetener with antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties. It’s sweet but naturally calorie-free. And it’s approved by the FDA.

Stevia increases insulin production and stabilizes blood sugar levels.

You can find stevia in different brands in many stores. The flavor depends on the brand, so maybe you need to taste some of them and find which one you like the most.

Erythritol

This is a sugar alcohol sweetener. Its taste is similar to sugar, and it’s low-calorie.

Erythritol doesn’t raise blood sugar levels, insulin, cholesterol or triglyceride levels. It also acts as an antioxidant and may improve blood vessel function in people with type 2 diabetes.

Studies show that erythritol is very safe. However, as with other sugar alcohols, it can cause digestive issues if you consume too much at a time.

leaf shaped glass bottleYacon syrup

Yacon syrup is extracted from the roots of the yacon plant. It tastes sweet, and it contains about 1.3 calories per gram.

It contains several simple sugars, including sucrose, fructose, and glucose. Although it has carbs, they don’t affect blood sugar the way regular sugar does.

Yacon syrup also contains 40–50% fructooligosaccharides. Studies show that fructooligosaccharides can decrease the hunger hormone ghrelin, which may reduce appetite and help you eat less.

Monk fruit

It’s a healthy sugar alternative. This sweetener is zero-calorie. It contains natural sugars, mainly fructose and glucose.

It’s high in antioxidants called mogrosides, which can be 150–200 times as sweet as sugar, according to the International Food Information Council Foundation.

Monk fruit is safe. It doesn’t raise blood sugar nor contain carbohydrates.

Only very small amounts of monk fruit natural sweeteners are needed to achieve the sweetness of sugar.
